On-Site Septic System Information
Maintenance Guidelines

SEO
If you must replace your on-lot disposal system (OLDS), financial assistance is available from the Pennsylvania Housing Financial Agency (PHFA) and the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).  Availability of the low interest loan is based on general requirements of your family income, credit worthiness, project type, project costs and required documentation.  Contact PHFA at 1-800-822-1174 to receive a list of lenders to determine if you qualify for credit approval of the loan.  The program's objective is for property owners to have a properly  operating OLDS and
to borrow less money for the project.

Do:

  • Maintain you septic tank according to DEP regulations.  Have it pumped by a septage hauler as often as recommended by the Sewage Enforcement Officer, or when the sludge on the bottom of the tank reaches a depth of 3 feet.  Inspect the baffles every time the tank is pumped.

  • Keep a record of pumping, inspections and other maintenance to the system.

  • Make sure the pumpings (or septage) are disposed of properly.  Ask the septage hauler.

  • Practice water conservation so the absorption area stays drier and better able to handle waste water.  Repair dripping faucets; run washing machines and dishwashers only when full; use water-saving devices.

  • Divert rain spouting and surface water away from the septic system.

  • Call your municipal Sewage Enforcement Officer (SEO) if your water usage goes up dramatically.  You may need a larger septic tank and/or larger drain field.

  • Call your SEO is you think there might be a problem with your system

Don't:

  • Don't plant trees over the drainfield where roots can clog pipe lines.

  • Don't drive or park over any part of the system.  the only cover should be mowed grass.  The weight of vehicles can smash the pipes.

  • Don't use septic tank additives or cleaners.  They don't help the system - some may hurt the biological balance in the septic tank.

  • Don't pour harmful chemicals down the drain.  Lye, bleach, sodium hydroxide, liquid paint, solvents, etc. can kill the beneficial bacteria that treat the waste water.

  • Don't get into the septic tank.  Methane gas replaces the air in the tank and humans can die from lack of oxygen in minutes.

  • Don't lose the location of your septic system.  Keep a sketch of its location for service visits and for the sale of the house.
